Academic Counseling is available through SAS to support students with disabilities in exploring educational, career, and personal goals throughout their academic journey. Through a collaborative and student-centered approach, SAS counselors can help students identify strengths, explore options, make informed decisions and connect with campus resources.
SAS counseling is available to students enrolled in both credit and noncredit courses, ensuring access to guidance regardless of educational pathway.
Areas of support may include:
- Exploring majors, interests, and career pathways
- Developing educational plans
- Planning for certificates, degrees, and transfer
- Selecting and scheduling courses
- Connecting to campus and community resources
- Building self-advocacy skills and confidence in navigating college systems
SAS counseling is one of several counseling resources available at 大象视频 College. Students may choose to meet with counselors in other campus counseling departments if they prefer. SAS counseling offers an additional option for students who would like support that integrates academic planning with disability-related accommodations and access needs.
Academic counseling is an ongoing resource available throughout your time at 大象视频. Students are encouraged to connect with an SAS counselor whenever they would like support with accommodations, academic planning, goal setting, or navigating campus resources.
Recommended Check-Ins
- Students are encouraged to meet with a SAS counselor at least once per semester and any time they would like to discuss their accommodations or academic goals.
- Regular check-ins can help ensure your accommodations and Education Plan continue to reflect your needs, strengths and goals.
Accommodation Forms
Accommodation forms communicate authorized academic accommodations to instructors and help facilitate the implementation of the accommodations in the classroom. Students must request updated accommodation forms each semester if they wish to use accommodations in their courses.
- Continuing students who have already met with a SAS counselor may request accommodation forms for new courses by phone or email. Students are encouraged to meet with an SAS counselor periodically to discuss how their accommodations are working and whether any updates or adjustments may be helpful.
Students are encouraged to meet with a counselor as early as possible to develop an Education Plan.
- Students registered with SAS may be eligible for priority (early) registration. To continue receiving this benefit, students must have an Education Plan on file by the end of their second semester.
Planning ahead can help reduce uncertainty and support a smooth academic experience.
SAS counseling is designed to be collaborative, flexible, and responsive. You can expect:
- A supportive environment to discuss goals, questions and concerns
- Guidance in making academic decisions that align with your priorities
- Help navigating college policies and processes
- Adjustments over time as your goals and circumstances change
Your experiences, preferences, and goals are central to this process!
Your support helps create a predictable and inclusive environment where students can engage fully.
Faculty can support student access by:
- Understanding that some students may experience mobility, stamina, or medical conditions that make traveling between campus locations challenging with or without transportation support.
- Allowing students who use approved transportation accommodations reasonable opportunity to arrive and depart in coordination with their scheduled cart service.
- Encouraging students to connect with SAS if they disclose mobility-related concerns.
For example, faculty may occasionally observe that a student appears to have significant difficulty walking long distances, traveling between classes, or accessing campus locations. While faculty should not inquire about a student's disability or medical condition, it may be appropriate to privately share information about SAS as a campus resource that can explore possible accommodations and support services. If you have questions or need clarification, please contact the SAS counselor listed on the accommodation form or reach out to SAS:
