Cart Service provides on-campus transportation support for students whose mobility or physical stamina makes traveling longer distances difficult. This service is designed to support safe, reliable, and equitable access to classrooms and essential campus locations.
Cart service operates within defined areas, schedules, and safety guidelines.
Students interested in this service must be registered with SAS and meet with a SAS counselor.
During your Welcome Meeting, or in a follow‑up appointment, you and a SAS counselor can discuss whether the cart service may support your access needs.
Approval is based on a review of documentation by a SAS counselor during a scheduled appointment.
Documentation should include:
- A statement from a qualified provider identifying a disability or medical condition that affects mobility or physical stamina.
- A description of how the condition impacts your ability to navigate campus distances.
- The anticipated duration of the condition (temporary or permanent).
- A recommendation for limited walking or transportation assistance (ex. campus cart support).
Use of the Release of Information / Disability Verification is preferred.
Temporary accommodations may be available for short-term conditions (such as recovery from injury or surgery). These requests are reviewed each semester to determine if transportation support may continue to be necessary and to ensure the service continues to match your needs, if applicable.
To support safety and consistency, cart service operates within defined areas and during the following days/times:
- Available only on the Oceanside Main Campus
- Travel is limited to paved main roads and approved interior pathways
- Monday through Friday: 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Hours are subject to change each semester.
SAS will work with you to determine and communicate designated pick‑up and drop‑off locations.
In most cases, transportation includes:
- Pick‑up from a parking lot or campus transit location
- Drop‑off at academic destinations that are difficult to access due to mobility needs
- Rides must be scheduled in advance based upon your class schedule
- Requests for additional academic locations (such as the Library or Cafeteria) must also be arranged ahead of time.
Planning ahead helps ensure smoother coordination and reduces uncertainty.
To support safety and shared access:
- Students must be able to board and exit the cart independently
- Cart staff are not trained to provide lifting or medical transport
- Cart service is not on demand
- Service is limited to on-campus transportation only (no off-campus travel or personal errands)
- Riders may include only:
- Approved student
- A Personal Attendant (if needed)
- A Service Animal or Emotional Support Animal
- If a student has three absences in one month without notice, service may be paused until meeting with a SAS counselor or SAS Faculty Coordinator (or designee).
- Not following safety expectations (such as remaining seated or wearing a seatbelt) may result in immediate suspension, with follow up required before service resumes.
These guidelines are in place to support safety, fairness, and consistent service for all riders.
- Students are expected to be ready at the scheduled pick-up time
- Availability and wait times may vary depending on demand
- SAS will make a good-faith effort to provide transportation, but exact timing cannot be guaranteed
If your plans change, timely communication helps maintain access for everyone:
- Please cancel at least 30 minutes in advance if you no longer need your ride
- To cancel, contact: 760.795.6658 or sas@miracosta.edu
Services may be cancelled when necessary for safety reasons (ex. weather conditions or cart maintenance).
- SAS will contact students scheduled for the day to notify them if service is cancelled due to safety reasons
Students who drive to campus may also consider applying for a . You are encouraged to consult with your physician to explore this option.
If you have questions, need to adjust your schedule, or experience any concerns, SAS is here to support you. Please contact us at 760.795.6658 or sas@miracosta.edu
Faculty can support student access by:
- Understanding that some students may experience mobility, stamina, or medical conditions that make traveling between campus locations challenging with or without transportation support.
- Allowing students who use approved transportation accommodations reasonable opportunity to arrive and depart in coordination with their scheduled cart service.
- Encouraging students to connect with SAS if they disclose mobility-related concerns.
For example, faculty may occasionally observe that a student appears to have significant difficulty walking long distances, traveling between classes, or accessing campus locations. While faculty should not inquire about a student's disability or medical condition, it may be appropriate to privately share information about SAS as a campus resource that can explore possible accommodations and support services. If you have questions or need clarification, please contact the SAS counselor listed on the accommodation form or reach out to SAS at (760) 795‑6658 or sas@miracosta.edu.
