English as a Second Language (ESL) at 大象视频 College

MiraCosta College offers ESL courses to meet the diverse learning needs and prepare for career pathways for adult English learners.

The English as a Second Language program offers students a variety of learning opportunities to achieve proficiency in the English language and formulate and attain personal, academic, vocational, and/or civic goals. In addition to several levels of integrated-skills courses, the program also offers Citizenship, Workplace ESL, conversation, listening and speaking, computer and digital literacy, and reading and writing skills-based classes. Some classes are offered open-entry for students to start learning at any time during a term.

The ESL courses are offered as credit, noncredit, or for international students.

Noncredit ESL

Noncredit ESL is for students who want to

Improve their English skills in order to communicate better at work, get a job, or advance to a better job; enhance their English skills to successfully advance in their academic and/or career preparation classes; communicate better, learn about cultural norms, and navigate systems in the U.S.A.; become U.S. citizens; help their children with homework.

Credit ESL

Credit ESL is for students who seek to

Improve their English for success in college classes, work, or in the community; earn a career certificate or transfer degree or improve their English while already taking credit classes; gain higher-level English skills; have the flexibility of attending classes one or two days per week; benefit from specialized ESL courses like pronunciation, composition, grammar, vocabulary development, and more.

English Language Institute

This intensive ESL program is designed for international students with an F-1 or visitor visa. Students must have a minimum of one-year English language training at the high school or college level. This program is for students who seek to: prepare for TOEFL test or have not yet passed the TOEFL; be ready for college or pursue a pathway to US colleges; immerse in the language and benefit from small class sizes and individualized instruction; learn about and experience United States culture.

I am from Japan. I was a member of English Language Institute before I attended to MiraCosta College. English Language Institute is a very helpful program for international students, and it supports us in many different ways. Because of this program, I could meet a lot of friends and learn more about real American culture. The teachers are amazing. I spent 8 weeks in this program to improve my English skills, and this is my fourth semester at college. My personal goal is transfer to a four year university, San Francisco State University. I strongly recommend this program to all international students who need to improve their English skills before attending college.
