Health Services
Health Services offers walk-in crisis appointments Monday through Friday. These counselors are required to maintain the confidentiality of your protected health information under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), with few exceptions. Confidentiality
As outlined in Board Policy and Administrative Procedure 3540: Sexual and Other Assaults on Campus, the MiraCosta Police Department will maintain your confidentiality, with few exceptions. This means that they will not share information about your contact with their office or any services you received with anyone without your written permission, except as required by law.
Exceptions required by law are rare, and may include:
- A signed court order or judicial subpoena.
- Imminent danger to yourself or others (for example, suicide or homicide).
- Reports involving suspected abuse of children or other vulnerable individuals, in which a report will be made to the appropriate state agency.
- Reports involving a violent crime under the Clery Act (e.g. sex offenses, homicide, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson, stalking, domestic violence, and dating violence if it occurred on campus or on university owned or operated property) may result in Timely Warnings or Emergency Warnings about the general location, crime, or safety information, without disclosing your personally identifying information.
Statistical information about the use of services and demographics for reporting and planning purposes will be provided in aggregate and anonymized.

How can I protect myself?
If you have experienced sexual violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, dating/domestic violence, or stalking, you may be eligible for a restraining or protective order, such as a:
- Emergency Protective Order
- Gun Violence Emergency Protective Order
- Criminal Protective Order
- Domestic Violence
- Other than Domestic Violence
- Civil Protection Order

- Civil Harassment
- Temporary Restraining Order
- Permanent Restraining Order
Police can ask for an emergency protective order, while a judge must issue a criminal protective order as part of a case. You may also file a request for a restraining order with the courts. The California Courts can be a helfpul resource.
